What is Anterior Endoscopic Cervical Microdiscectomy?

An Anterior Endoscopic Cervical Microdiscectomy is a minimally invasive surgical technique that removes the bulging portion of a herniated or ruptured disc through a tiny incision in the neck. When a cervical disc herniates, the bulging portion oftentimes applies pressure to nerve roots and causes severe pain that can radiate into the shoulders and arms. Using this minimally invasive method, only the bulging portion is removed while the rest of the cervical disc is carefully preserved.

Benefits of an Anterior Endoscopic Cervical Microdiscectomy include:

  • Tiny incision made through the front of the neck, instead of the back, offers surgeons a clear pathway to the affected disc while minimizing trauma to surrounding muscles and tissue.
  • Because this is a minimally invasive surgery, there is typically much less blood loss and post-operative pain than with traditional surgical options.
  • Surgery is completed in an outpatient setting, with the patient under general anesthesia. Typically, patients are able to return home the same day – Oftentimes with minimal scarring and immediate pain relief.

Our Treatment Approach

We perform all Anterior Endoscopic Cervical Microdisectomy procedures using advanced minimally invasive methods. Here’s how our spine surgeons approach this cutting-edge outpatient surgery:

  • Our skilled surgeons use an endoscope (tiny camera) and advanced minimally invasive surgical tools placed through a small incision in the neck to carefully navigate to the cervical spine, usually with lessened disruption to the surrounding area.
  • Using the endoscope, they will remove the painful, bulging part of the disc while preserving the remainder.
  • After the camera and tools are removed, the incision requires only a small bandage.

While our patients typically experience immediate post-operative pain relief, we may recommend wearing a cervical neck brace for added stability while through the healing process. Because our focus is on minimally invasive surgery, the recovery time and healing process is generally much faster than with traditional open surgery. This allows patients to return to their daily life, work and activities quicker and usually with no complications.
